About regional projects
From April 2014, Hokkaido University of Education Hakodate was reorganized into an international regional department with the aim of training human resources who will be responsible for regional development with an international perspective and educational mindset.
The regional project is a regional problem-based learning PBL (“Problem Based Learning”) that was newly established in 2015 as a compulsory requirement for all students in the new department in order to cultivate the practical problem-solving ability necessary for playing an active role in the region. Therefore, we collected sounds peculiar to Hakodate under the theme of "Survey and proposal of sound environment in the area" and summarized the sounds on the map as Hakodate sound map.
Goryokaku Festival

Hakodate City is located at the southern tip of Hokkaido, and has been used as a gateway to marine transportation for a long time. Since the Meiji era, it has undergone many changes, such as becoming a base for the development of Hokkaido. Volunteers gathered in the Showa era because "Goryokaku", which was the stage of the final battle (Boshin War) in which Japan transitioned to a modern nation, must be passed down to posterity as a historical heritage together with historical facts. The Hakodate Goryokaku Festival Restoration Parade began in 1945. This voice will be the battle scene in the restoration procession held at the Goryokaku Festival.
Tanabata candles

There is an event called Tanabata in Japan. This event celebrates in many different parts of Japan and one of it located in Hakodate that has a special custom of "getting candles". This is a Halloween-like custom. Children wear Yukata, carry lanterns, sing at neighbouring house, and get candles and candies. This voice was recorded with the cooperation of elementary school students in Hakodate.
Hakodate Tropical Botanical Garden

At the Hakodate Tropical Botanical Garden, 3000 plants of about 300 species such as bananas and cacti are exhibited. There is an observatory in the center of the greenhouse where you can observe the plants from a little higher. In addition, there are hot springs on outside, and Japanese macaques that enter the hot springs during the winter are especially popular.
Russian Orthodox Church

In 1860 (Ansei 7), Japan's first Orthodox church, the "Resurrection Church of the Lord," was built here. At first, it has a history as an attached cathedral of the Russian Consulate, and later as a cathedral that stands at the birthplace of the Orthodox Church in Japan. Currently, many people visit it as an important cultural property of the country and as one of the sightseeing bases of Hakodate City.
Kosetsuen

The Koyukien in Miharashi Park is a full-scale "landscape garden" created by Minejiro Iwafune, an unsealed house in Hakodate City, from around 1891, and was used as a villa for the Iwafune family. The name Kosetsuen is said to have been named by the owner of the Jodo-shu Chion-in Temple in Kyoto, which came to Japan in the Taisho era, to mean "a garden that smells plums in the snow."
Hakodate tram

The Hakodate Tram is a train that runs from the western part of Hakodate to Yunokawa. Trams started running in Hakodate in 1913, more than 100 years ago. Since the streetcar travels back and forth over a wide area of Hakodate, it is often used by Hakodate citizens for shopping, commuting, and school. There are nearly 30 vehicles with different shapes and colors in the streetcars, so you can enjoy the difference in appearance of each vehicle.
Mashumaru

The Mashu Maru, which had been operating until the last day of the Seikan Ferry on March 13, 1988, is moored and preserved at the old Hakodate No. 2 quay, which was the actual platform, and is open to the public. In addition to being able to observe the wheelhouse and wireless communication room as they were at that time, the front green cabin will be remodeled into an exhibition room to display actual parts and models, and the history and mechanism of the Seikan Ferry will be explained with panels and videos.
Old Public Hall of Hakodate

The Old Public Hall of Hakodate was built in 1910 as a meeting place for citizens and an office of the Chamber of Commerce. The building is a representative of Meiji Western-style wooden architecture that expresses Western style with Japanese technology. It was registered as a national important cultural property in 1974 because of its light blue and yellow exterior, luxurious interior, and furniture condition.
Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse

The Hakodate Bay Area is a standard tourist spot where various tourist facilities such as Hakodate Meijikan, Lucky Pierrot, and Hakodate Seafood Market are lined up in Hakodate Bay, centering on the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse. In particular, the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse opened in April 1988 and has many shops selling souvenirs and miscellaneous goods.
In addition, the main event "Hakodate Christmas Fantasy" is held every winter. You can experience a fantastic world as if you were in a dream, such as a large Christmas tree with a height of about 20 m and fireworks at Hakodate Port.

The oldest manual elevator north of Tohoku

The Hakodate City Community Exchange Town Development Center has a manual elevator installed in 1934. This manual elevator can still be operated in active service, making it the oldest active manual elevator north of Tohoku.
Mt. Hakodate Ropeway

Mt. Hakodate is so beautiful that it has been introduced as a three-star in "Million Dollar Night View" and "Michelin Green Guide Japan". We can get to the top of the mountain via ropeway.
However, Mt. Hakodate is not only a night view but also a spectacular view that can be seen in the daytime. In addition, the city of Hakodate is surrounded by clouds only a few times a year, mainly in June, and you can overlook the sea of clouds from Mt. Hakodate.
Hakodate Morning Market

It is a collection of about 250 shops. In the morning market, dried fish and fruits and vegetables are sold, mainly freshly caught marine products such as salmon, crabs, and squids. Open early in the morning, it is a popular morning market where you can enjoy Hokkaido food such as fresh seafood such as seafood bowls.
